302 - Creating Conditions in Which People Can Heal with Michael Sykes
“When your depth of knowing yourself has widened, you can include people that don't look like you.” - Michael Sykes
The answer to righting the world’s many wrongs is more love. Love is also the problem. If you’re new here, then solving this conundrum may seem hopeless. Fear not!
In part one of my conversation with Michael Sykes, we began with a simple question: How can we encourage ideas or policies rich in love for each other when so many of us struggle to love ourselves?
OK, maybe not so simple a question after all.
In part two, Michael and I dig into the societal pressures, inherited traumas, and self-doubts that have disconnected us from our authentic loving natures. We explore what it means to build our capacity for radical self-acceptance in a time of wealth- and power-hoarding. We also discuss the steps necessary to create blueprints for a more just and equitable world.
“I've done the work, I went through the journey, and I've healed,” begins Michael. The work, of course, is the therapy he’s sought out, the community he’s built, and the accountability he’s accepted along the way.
Michael is the founder of Equitable Solutions and author of Easy Equity, a transformative workbook that delves into the interconnected realms of mind, body, and spirit. His work is rooted in vulnerability and authenticity, offering individuals and organizations tools that encourage reflection, mindfulness, and intentional practices for healing and growth.
Self-love is at the core of everything Michael creates. “When you're intentional about loving you, you realize how much you're worth, and then you start to understand your own capabilities.” But setting an intention to love yourself more is only the start of a lifelong endeavor. That’s where practice and capacity building come into play. You’re gonna fail. You’re also gonna succeed.
“I try to create the conditions and environments in which people can make the choice to heal, the choice to let go, and the choice to pour into themselves,” Michael says. “‘The more you explore yourself, pour into yourself, you're going to start to become innovative and creative,” he observes. “You're going to start to notice some different things about you, and then you're going to start to make some decisions. It's a process.”
