292 - Simon Mont, Part 2 - What Is Your God and How Aware of That Are You?

“We're not the main character of some of the most important stories.” - Simon Mont

If Simon Mont wants to get into a conversation about ego, idols, and the mystical process of birthing new realities, who am I to discourage him? “Whatever you're ultimately concerned with is, definitionally, your God,” he begins. “God comes from the German: that which you invoke. It's what you're invoking in every moment.”

Thus begins the second half of my wide-ranging chat with Simon, a lifelong learner doing his best to remember and respect the sacredness of the world and help others do the same. When he's not attending to co-founder duties at Harmonize, a consulting group that helps organizations bridge the gap between values, vision, and impact, you can find him writing poetry, making music, building furniture, or playing whatever sport someone invites him to.

For the record, these wildly eclectic, philosophical discussions are my jam! There’s a lot of wisdom tucked into the detours and unexpected asides.

But back to g-o-d. If that three-letter word makes you uncomfortable, Simon invites us to be with what’s coming up. “If I’m ultimately concerned with, let's say, being a great therapist,” he suggests, “well then my idea of a great therapist is my God. My life is directed toward praying toward that God, I will sacrifice things to the altar of that God.”

According to Simon, we’re all faced with this inescapable puzzle. What is our God, and how aware of it are we? Once we're inside that framing, “you realize there's no escaping the theological conversation,” says Simon. “You have a God. Great! Now, is it an idol?”

“We can get edgier, right? Like, healing. Is that your idol?” Simon continues. “These two ideas combined are incredible power. You have a God. Is it an idol? And those two things then can become like an incredible engine of constantly deepening everything to become more aware of, more aligned with what I want to be, what I'm ultimately concerned with.”

Self-awareness is the first step in building our capacity for destruction, rebirth, and expansive connection. ”When we're in that quality of conversation with each other, that is how we are summoning a different thing into existence.”

So, dig in!
