311 - Invisibility, Trauma, and Becoming Seen: Therapy + Spirituality with Caroline Fernandes
“There is a component of clinical work that we really need to look into and just not lose ourselves in the spiritual part. I really, truly believe that spirituality and psychology they're twin flames.“ ~ Caroline Fernandes
Dr. Caroline Fernandes on complex trauma, mediumship, and what the therapy field has to learn from the spirit world. A deep look at multicultural identity, personal and systemic healing, communication between worlds and dreams.
I’m spinning all the hits on this episode: grief, ghosts, and the energetic shifts that happen when we incorporate the spiritual into processing personal, cultural, or systemic wounds. That’s little “s” spirituality, not the patriarchal-sponsored kind.
The addition of spirituality is important in light of my conversation with Dr. Caroline Fernandes. She’s a holistic psychotherapist specializing in complex trauma, relational wounds, and spiritually transformative experiences. Caroline integrates mind-body-spirit practices with evidence-based modalities, including EMDR, CBT, DBT, and somatic approaches. Her work supports deep processing, nervous system regulation, meaning-making, and sustainable healing across life transitions and identity development.
Caroline is also a Reiki master and a psychic medium with 25 years’ experience. She integrates psychology with energetic work, creating an environment where clients can explore a more mystical side of healing alongside the corporeal. “It's interesting to see how, spiritually, everything is just so connected,” she marvels. “I have worked on myself, I have trained, and I'm constantly doing my work here to hold the balance, and it's not an easy thing.”
Ease is a luxury, especially when there’s so much hurt around and inside of us––much of it intertwined with the choices our ancestors made. Caroline embodies this daily tension. She was born in the Middle East, raised in India, and now lives in America. “I'm Portuguese Indian,” she explains. The blend of cultures and religions, plus her heightened sensitivity to energy at a young age, made it difficult for her to express early traumas and challenges. “I was clinically depressed, but not getting the support that I needed. I also kind of came from a country where mental health is shunned.”
Survival meant shrinking. “I learned to be invisible,” says Caroline, who encounters similar dissociative strategies with her clients. She supports them regardless of their belief system. “There is a component of clinical work that we really need to look into, and not lose ourselves in the spiritual part. I really truly believe that spirituality and psychology they're twin flames,” she observes.
Whether you're totally woo-woo or absolutely whoa-whoa, there’s an invitation in Caroline’s story. Listen deeply, question earnestly, and practice authentically.
